Yung Ok Yoo
Born in Jakarta and now living in Sydney, Yung ok Yoo has always felt most at ease expressing her feelings visually. “I suppose it stemmed from my childhood", she explains. “My father is Korean and my mother is Vietnamese; they both spoke very little English and I spoke no Korean and very little mother-tongue. We always had to find other ways of communicating, whether it was through little drawings or hand gestures.”
Yung Ok has trained in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography and jewellery and object design. Recently she established “Concrete_id_interiors”, a new project creating customised art and design works for private clients and businesses, in close creative collaboration with her clients. The project reflects Yung Ok’s fascination with the artistic process, a mystery which she expresses this way:
“From the early stages of the concept: The First Thought, through to the creation: The First Stroke, it is a journey.”
Yung Ok’s works for Kindergallery are custom installations exhibiting strikingly original elements and a complex beauty, replete with emotional and imaginative possibilities. In “Cycles”, a colourful swarm of dragonflies dances across the wall, hovers over the canvas, and then ascends to the ceiling. “Autumn Butterflies” is similarly liberated from the frame: a bouquet of origami butterflies flutters across the room, echoed by crimson cherry blossoms - their floral brethren - fixed in ink on canvas.
